Friendship, Friendship, Just The Perfect Blendship
Everyone wants a friend, someone in whom he can confide and share good times. While this is what we all want sometimes it’s not so easy to find, especially if you’re shy. That was the case with Poindexter.
Why, Poindexter was so very timid that whenever his relatives came to visit he’d hide under the carpet. When the kids in the neighborhood asked him if he wanted to come out and play Poindexter really wanted to but “instead of saying yes, he would look down at his feet and blush and make up some silly excuse.”
What Poindexter really loved to do was surround himself with his stuffed animals and read them a story. In fact, he loved reading so much that his favorite place was the public library where he could sit by himself and read.
Now, hard as it may be to believe it was there that Poindexter met someone who was actually shyer than he was - it was Shelby, a turtle, who asked Mrs. Polen, the librarian, for books on how to make friends. When Mrs. Polen asked Poindexter to help him find these books both of them learned valuable lessons, and so will young readers.
New Yorker cartoonist Mike Twohy uses ink and watercolor to illustrate his first children’s book. His pictures are warm, whimsical and eye-catching.
Highly recommended for young readers (especially shy ones).
