VOLKER HINZ

While the photographs included in this volume have the immediacy of a candid snapshot one is also aware that they are works of art.  The way that Volker Hinz phonographs has been described as “the art of intuition and atmosphere.”  How true as you will see for yourself when examining the selections in this estimable collection.  While you will, indeed, see the faces of numerous famous people you’ll not be looking at their faces as presented to the public but rather you’ll be seeing them as authentic human beings.  How Hinz accomplishes this I know not - only that he does it amazingly well.

Born in Hamburg, Germany he first became known early in the 1970s as he captured politics in Germany.  For some 40 years he has been shooting photos for Stern magazine and has in fact become known as the eyes of his country.  Hinz’s work at Stern provided entree to people and places throughout the world including shots of New York in the wee hours, Mexico and Hollywood.  For his efforts he received the prestigious World Press Award, additional honors and countless accolades.  He is, indeed, a photojournalist without peer.

As you browse this volume you’ll find photographs of notables in all areas of life from the theatre to sports to politics.  In many of the shots it seems that the subject had been caught in an unguarded moment yet I realize this is probably not true but the charm, warmth and honesty of the photo is totally due to Hinz’s skill.  His work is in great demand, garnering top dollar at auction yet is gathered here for our pleasure - enjoy!
