A Posthumous Mickey Spillane Thriller - Riveting Listening

As we understand it this story is a posthumous collaboration made possible by papers found after the death of Mickey Spillane. Whatever the case, the collaboration is a seamless one. Collins has perfectly captured the iconic Mike Hammer we remember, albeit an older having-seen-it-all version.

Actor Stacy Keach is perfection as the narrator. Many well remember his big screen and television portrayals of Hammer - who better to give voice to KISS HER GOODBYE?

It is now 1970 Hammer has gone to Florida where he is recuperating after almost being killed in a mob shoot-out. He wants to forget New York and all the criminals who gave him pain. He plans to retire and live out his remaining years in the land of the sun. However, he returns to the Big Apple upon hearing of the death of his mentor, Doolan. Apparently Doolan took his own life - it seems clear because the bullet came from his gun, a test shows he fired the shot and his apartment door was locked. But this isn't the first open and shut case Hammer has torn apart.

He seems to be at loose ends with his office closed and the one woman he loved, Velda, gone. Then a woman is murdered and he's drawn into an unfamiliar world - a search for a bunch of diamonds, clubs where cocaine tops the menu, a tough lady assistant district attorney, and more.

After this much time, with his pain meds low can Hammer still take on all comers and win?

- Super fine listening.
